Running AI models on your own PC — instead of paying per token for a cloud API — has gone from hobbyist curiosity to a genuinely practical option in 2026. A properly specced desktop can now run a 13B-30B parameter language model, generate images, or fine-tune a small model overnight, all without your data leaving the house. The catch is that "AI-ready" isn't a single spec sheet — it comes down to a handful of components that actually matter, and a lot of marketing noise around the rest. Here's what to actually buy, and what we'd skip, based on the gear moving through our Auckland warehouse.

What Actually Limits Local AI Performance

Unlike gaming, local AI workloads live or die on one number: VRAM, not core count or clock speed. A language model has to fit almost entirely in your graphics card's memory to run at usable speed — spill over into system RAM and performance falls off a cliff. That's why an 8GB card struggles with anything past a small 7B model, while a 16GB card comfortably handles quantized 13B models, and 32GB opens the door to 30B-70B models or full local video generation. CPU and system RAM still matter — they handle model loading, data preprocessing and any layers that don't fit on the GPU — but the GPU's memory size is the number to plan a build around first.
