Die Tomcat war ausschließlich bei der US Navy sowie der Luftwaffe der Islamischen Republik Iran im Einsatz. Der Spitzname \"Tomcat\" leitet sich vom Rufzeichen von Vizeadmiral Thomas Connolly ab, der der Tradition der USN folgte, Grumman-Flugzeuge mit katzenartigen Beinamen zu versehen. Die Grumman F-14B (163217) operierte Anfang 1999 mit den \"Jolly Rogers\" (VF-103). Im Jahr 2001 wechselte das Flugzeug zur VF-102. Im Sommer 2003 kehrte es zur VF-103 zurück. Das Flugzeug war die erste VF-103 F-14, die 2004 das Sparrow Hawk HUD erhielt. Das Flugzeug erhielt 2005 eine neue Lackierung zum 60. Jahrestag des Einsatzes der F-14 bei VF-103.
