Die einsitzige Variante der Il-2 wurde im März 1941 eingeführt, aber nach schweren Verlusten durch die verbesserte zweisitzige Version mit einem Heckschützen ersetzt. Ende 1943 wurde eine neuere Version eingeführt, bei der die äußeren Flügelpaneele in einem Winkel von 15 Grad nach hinten gepfeilt waren, um den Schwerpunkt zu verbessern.
