Es wurde unter Verwendung des Rohrs der berühmten französischen 75-mm-Kanone Mle 1897 entwickelt. Viele dieser Geschütze wurden nach der Invasion Frankreichs erbeutet und erwiesen sich als gültige, schnelle und relativ kostengünstige Lösung, um die deutschen Panzerabwehrtruppen mit einer leistungsfähigeren Waffe als der inzwischen veralteten 37-mm-PaK 36 auszustatten, die nicht mehr in der Lage war, die Panzerung modernerer und robusterer sowjetischer Panzer wie des KV-1 und des T-34 zu durchdringen. Sie konnte eine anständige Vielfalt an Munitionstypen verschießen und wurde auch von zahlreichen Panzerabwehreinheiten anderer Achsenmächte eingesetzt, die mit Deutschland verbündet waren.
