Das Design des Flugzeugs zeichnete sich durch einen großen Hochflügel und seitliche Schwimmer aus, wodurch es für Patrouillen-, Such- und Rettungseinsätze auf See geeignet war. Es wurde von einem 900 PS starken Isotta Fraschini Asso XI Motor angetrieben, der eine gute Reichweite und eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 275 km\/h ermöglichte. Die CANT Z.501 begann ihren operativen Dienst während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs, wurde aber während des Zweiten Weltkriegs im Mittelmeerraum ausgiebig von der Regia Aeronautica eingesetzt.
