The outbound travel adapter we currently stock only has two flat pins because it's designed to fit the standard Type A or B power sockets used in Japan. These sockets only accept two-pin plugs - either non-grounded (Type A) or, in some cases, grounded (Type B, which has two flat pins and one round/flat grounding pin).
However, many New Zealand devices use the Type I plug, which has three pins - two angled flat pins and a vertical grounding pin. The issue is that the grounding pin from the NZ plug has nowhere to go in the Japanese socket, and since our current adapter only accepts two-pin NZ plugs, three-pin NZ plugs physically won't fit into the adapter.
In short:
-
Japanese power sockets don't support the NZ grounding pin.
-
Our adapter only accepts 2-pin NZ plugs, which excludes a lot of devices.
-
As a result, many customers can't use the adapter with their standard 3-pin NZ devices.
That's why it would be helpful to look into adapters that can accommodate the 3-pin NZ plug while still safely adapting to Japan's 2-pin system - possibly with a grounded workaround or a universal input design.
