The STZ-5 was a rugged Soviet artillery tractor, known for its durability and reliability. Developed at the Stalingrad Tractor Works in collaboration with NATI, it entered mass production in 1937. It played a critical role in towing medium artillery pieces across the harsh terrain of the Eastern Front during World War II.

One of the most impressive tests of the STZ-5's endurance came in the form of long-distance non-stop runs between Stalingrad and Moscow in both 1935 and 1939, where it proved its mechanical reliability under continuous operation. By the start of the war in 1941, over 3,400 units were already in service with the Red Army.

The STZ-5 featured a fully enclosed cab, tracked rear drive, and a cargo platform at the rear that allowed it to carry ammunition or small artillery crews. Its simplicity and dependability made it the most widely produced military tractor in the USSR at that time. It remained in production until August 1942, when the German invasion reached and halted operations at the Stalingrad Tractor Works.
